Lesson 01
Tempo
Tempo Is the
Governor.
Putting Code
Don't stroke it harder. Roll it on-time.
Installing Today
A repeatable tempo that holds up under pressure. Nothing else.
Why This Lesson Matters
Every bad putting day
starts the same way.
- Rushed strokes
- Deceleration
- Steering
- Misjudging speed
That's not a talent problem. It's a timing problem.
Tempo is the governor of the stroke. When tempo is stable, everything else behaves better.
The Concept
What Tempo Actually Is.
Tempo = how fast the stroke happens. Back and through. The overall pace.
It is not:
- How hard you hit it
- How long the stroke looks
- How smooth it looks
Tempo is timing. And timing is what your brain controls best under pressure.
The Method
The Count.
Counting gives your brain a time rail. Instead of deciding when to start, how long to go back, when to accelerate, when to hit — your brain just follows the count. Less thinking. More consistency.
Your TempoRoll Count — Pick One
Option A — Count Up
1 — 2 — 3
Flow, smooth. Good if you tend to rush.
Option B — Count Down
3 — 2 — 1
Focus, decisive. Good if you tend to drift.
Neither is "right." The right one is the one that makes you calmer.
The Mechanics
The Three Beats.
1
Tiny trigger
A small press or lift. Your signal to begin. Starts the clock.
2
Smooth takeaway
The stroke goes back on tempo. Not rushed. Not slow. On the count.
3
Arrival and through-stroke
You do not hit the ball. You arrive on-time at the distance line and keep going.
Over the Ball
The Only Rule.
Once you step in — you only count.
No reads. No saving. No last-second help.
Practice
5-Minute Daily Drill.
Do this today. Right after this lesson if you can.
Drill 01
The Count
10
Putts · 6 ft
10
Putts · 12 ft
- Same tempo on every putt — no exceptions
- Silent count in your head
- Hold the finish until the ball stops rolling
Lesson 1 Takeaway
"Tempo absorbs imperfection."
Write that down if you have to.
Write that down if you have to.
- Your speed improves
- Your face behaves
- Your nerves calm down
- Your reads get easier
You just installed the engine.
